Material Atlas
Material Atlas is a living map of materials, language, landscapes and practices.

An emergent space that places an emphasis on the material and immaterial wealth of different geographical regions around the world. Material Atlas begins to decolonise language beyond the typological framework that exists in the current dominant universal understanding of materials, offering a more nuanced and blended approach that is co-developed by various practitioners around the world.

The first iteration of maps for the Material Atlas focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa, mapping material migration and various material landscapes across the region by charting, plotting and translating materials through sensorial adaptations. Material Atlas is co-created by Ma-tt-er, the British Council and ten creatives from ten Sub-Saharan African countries.

Betty Bulongo, Lusaka, Zambia
Isatu Harrison, Freetown, Sierra Leone
Kishan Goochoorum, Quatre-Bornes, Mauritius
Mamy Tall, Dakar, Senegal
Matthew Binary Edwards, Johannesburg, South Africa
Maxwell Mutanda, Harare, Zimbabwe
Naa Obeye, Accra, Ghana
Vanessa Nsona, Lilongwe, Malawi
Wacy Zacarias, Maputo, Mozambique
Yegwa Ukpo, Lagos, Nigeria

Material Atlas will encourage an evolving dialogue, which over time, will include contributions from multiple regions around the planet, finding connections through materials - a creative commons.

Material Atlas is part of the British Council’s Architecture Design and Fashion programme, Making Matters. It is a space in which to explore the nuanced approaches to various material languages around the world, as well as a catalyst for exchange between designers who are exploring circular design principles to support alternative and regenerative futures.
Ma-tt-er established, designed and co-developed the Material Atlas instigating a deeper awareness of how materials can play a role in reorienting narratives, behaviours, mechanisms and dialogues towards inclusivity, diversity and participation between ourselves, each other and our surroundings.

Ma-tt-er is a long-term collaborator of the British Council’s Maker Library Network, Beirut Design Week, Saudi Design Week, Circular Cultures Conference, Athens and Materials workshop lead for the Making Matters programme in 2020.

Material Mapping Guide

Ma-tt-er’s Material Mapping Guide is a navigational tool to chart and plot the materials that make up your practices, places and landscapes. Getting lost in encouraged, this guide will encourage you to wander, as well conducting a sense of intentionally navigating a place or space by relating to the materials that make up your world and our world.&nbsp;

The guide focuses on four primary material categories:&nbsp;

	<img width="1171" height="1171" width_o="1171" height_o="1171" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/69454606fa2b1ac04edb8cb3ebe951d204f66fc913afc09d07ac444e5a4fb00e/LEGENDE-NATIVE.png" data-mid="82129428" border="0" data-scale="2" data-no-zoom data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/69454606fa2b1ac04edb8cb3ebe951d204f66fc913afc09d07ac444e5a4fb00e/LEGENDE-NATIVE.png" />
	Native materials are indigenous to the land.

	<img width="1171" height="1171" width_o="1171" height_o="1171" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eee3a0fc00219f6eeb061b76cc1cd4e7f91a4b4228d840a6bad043eedffc315a/LEGENDE-LOCAL.png" data-mid="82129426" border="0" data-scale="2" data-no-zoom data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eee3a0fc00219f6eeb061b76cc1cd4e7f91a4b4228d840a6bad043eedffc315a/LEGENDE-LOCAL.png" />
	Local materials are citizens, but are not native to the land.

	<img width="1171" height="1171" width_o="1171" height_o="1171" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7b59a75b20b1a6b6401c7b19f87df02e835310e9b9ba3282d95281584429d790/LEGENDE-MIGRANT.png" data-mid="82129427" border="0" data-scale="2" data-no-zoom data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7b59a75b20b1a6b6401c7b19f87df02e835310e9b9ba3282d95281584429d790/LEGENDE-MIGRANT.png" />
	Migrant materials are voyagers that are visiting from other lands.

	<img width="1171" height="1171" width_o="1171" height_o="1171" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/466d30f0775a3e6326641998f7e54723756740945fb7011606e6f7aab563842f/LEGENDE-COSMIC.png" data-mid="82129425" border="0" data-scale="2" data-no-zoom data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/466d30f0775a3e6326641998f7e54723756740945fb7011606e6f7aab563842f/LEGENDE-COSMIC.png" />
	Cosmic materials are spirits and omnipresent to any land.

The Material Mapping Guide supports us in beginning to consider materials as fellow citizens, guiding us to form kinships to the non-human world. Our roles are merely guardians, stewards and caretakers of the the land and the planet. Material map making and building guides us towards relationality and provide access to ourselves and others.&nbsp;Discover what you’re made of.&nbsp;

“Try to leave the Earth a better place than when you arrived.” &nbsp;- Sidney Sheldon

	Recyclable, Revalue, Reclaim, Reinvent, Rethink.

An olefin, made from oil, a scourge to the environment and our cities, a signifier of industrial gain, profit and waste. Johannesburg, South Africa has an interesting relationship with plastic. It centres around the plastic Reclaimer, or Picker: a person that is part of a network of informal recycling who relies on the value of plastic and our consistent use of it to earn a living. This is done by traversing the city with massive bags on carts filled with ‘waste’, sorting it and selling it to buy-back centres for processing, Reclaimers currently get between R2.20-R3.20 per kilogram.The work done by reclaimers casts an extremely long shadow. It has created a lazy way for residents of suburban areas to discard plastic knowing someone else will process it using knowledge garnered from years of material interaction. Reclaimers have a material vocabulary unlike ours, one so sensitive to material value.

My exploration of HDPE is a means of trying to create something that represents the value inherent in the material. The process involves safely grinding and melting down bottles once containing household detergents and sunblock- which infuse smells of the materials’ past life into the object; the material is cast into cubes and then processed.&nbsp; Plastic marbling, reminiscent of that of a valuable stone.
The possibility of changing our perceived value of plastic starts with us understanding the distance it has
travelled and places it can go. A futur jewel of the complex Johannesburg.

matte is an experimental design studio from Johannesburg, focussed on designing with materials and processes in the South African context. Our approach to design is based on the concept of REIY (Recycle/redesign/reduce It Yourself) and MAKE DO, ways of working that push a variation of sustainable design in South Africa.#migrantmaterial #design #product #restoration
